It's indeed a surprising article. Just a day before, we had an article telling us how our government should not be biased toward celeb criminals and the very next day we get to seen an article in which it is explained on the reasons behind Sanjay Dutt's possessing of an Ak 47 rifle during the Riots and how his plea should be considered for Pardon.
Author starts off with recalling all the events which led to Sanjay Dutt's arrest for possessing armed weapons at his residence. Authors points out logically that circumstances which lead to a possible crime should be taken into consideration before coming to a conclusion. Though its clearly stated in Indian Penal code that any person who possesses armed weapon without license will be imprisoned for 6 years no explanations asked which will in default put Sajay Dutt behind bars, one should also understand the situation he and his family were going throught when Sanjay Dutt had to get a weapon to save his family. Author supports Sanjay Dutt's reasoning and also appreciates his honesty for accepting his guilt for purchasing illegally a dangerous weapon. During the 1993 communal riots many hindu communities were threateing Sanjay Dutt for he was protecting the muslin community near his residence. Eventunally an actual attack too happened on Sanjay Dutt. Though he lodged a complaint that he and his family would be in danger and that he needed police protection, Sanjay dutt realised that any delay from the police department would put him and his family in complete danger. Though his intentions were true to possess a rifle the path he chose to procure the weapon seems to be the real reason why Supreme court had sentenced him for 5 years which is one year less than the usual sentence and court says that the concession was considered for the honest intention. it would be a secure shield for any one to attack on Sanjay Dutt'ss house when they would come to know that he had a weapon purchased.
Author then denies Supreme court for blindly following the rule book for sentencing a person like Sanjay Dutt and concludes that his plea should be accepted and pardoning him would be a noble gesture to set a man free who had to choose the wrong path only to save his family
