Once upon a time there was an Election Commission of India which would go to any extent to expose a corrupt politician if he had spend money illegally for his or her election campaign, the punishment was also severe with a mere disqualification to the extent of being exiled from politics. This would perhaps be remembered a fairy tale story if public don't wake up and challenge government's attempt to curb ECI power in the name of prevailing peace during elections.Recently there was an appeal in supreme court on behalf of government against ECI that it should now start considering politicians submission of their monetary account as a plain reading instead of thorough check and recheck questioning the authentication of such financial statements. With the advent of time and technology, it had become more transparent and doable for ECI in making the expenditure of a political campaign with the help of Income tax department and other independent bodies and more over they were made public for the citizens to choose wisely through elections. Though Press conference of India commended ECI's work for exposing a correct politician for illegally distribute monet during her campaign , and was disqualified even after she won, the attitude change in short span when government realized the real power when ECI has exposed the concept of 'Paid news' through a brave reporter against Ashok Chavan. He was then contesting for Chief Minister role in Maharashtra. Eventually he won, and he pleaded for his innocence in a lower court and then high court but was rejected for obvious reasons. The amount of money which flows during an election campaign is no secret. And we are in an era where politics is considered as the most successful business with heavy return on Investment so politicians are business who would mind spilling money even if its for a mere Panchayat election.
Now that appeal has been raised in supreme court by the government which had changed its good opinion on ECI to a fearful view that ECI is not being fare to the so called innocent politicians, article urges all the social acitivists, NGO and civilians who feels responsible to raise their voice and condemn this double minded behavior of the government. What ECI had been doing is an eye opener and an open warning to all those business minds who wanted to enter politics but slicing all its power through ridiculous amendments to the existing will only make things worse. Article ends with a satirical note on the citizens of this country that this small issue can be ignored if we ready to leave our democracy, free speech and fair elections in grave danger.
