Hindu : 8 Apr - Editorial : Lokayukhtha Modi-fication

Though on surface it looks strong to have a multi member body for the recently formed Lokayuktha committee in Gujarat, this article throws insight on the real intentions of Gujarat's Chief Minister, Mr.Modi if dug deep. Firstly, Modi was never happy with a single headed Lokayuktha who would be appointed by Chief Justice of High court. In a report sent to Governor, he questioned the credibility of such appointment and also implementing the duties of Lokayuktha under a single hand. This reasoning won him the confidence to form a committee, but not one, who would now be heading Lokayuktha in curbing corruption from Gujarat.Article says that in a way Modi has won by making such a dilution of minds and the members who were chosen for the committee strengthens his influence of the decisions that shall be taken by this body. Committee which comprised of Chief Minister, One Minister, Assembly Speaker, One from the opposition party and one appointed by Chief Justice makes it even more difficult for the opposition parties to believe their expediency.

Though Modi argues that this was the same proposal proposed by the central government while passing the National Lokpal Bill, it is undoubtedly understood that an opposition leader and an appointed member by chief justice are minority in the group and the decision of the committee will be highly influence by the ruling party. Also Author feels its a disgrace for the state government to put in ridiculous rules by the committee that the evidence will not be put in public and the corrupt ministers info will not be declared openly and such a offence is punishable by imprisonment. Author ends the topic which a remark that Modi have won the first step in modifying the cause to uproot corruption but will have to play his next step cautiously as the opposition parties prepare to question him for every decision he take in the name of State patriotism and development.
