Hindu : 30 Apr - Editorial : hot spot in a spot

The western ghats are now in danger from the monsters of industrialization and tribal development. the high level working group has been asked to study the recommendations given by Western Ghats Ecological expert panel. though western ghats had been undisturbed even in the modern era, there is a possibility that all four states, in whose jurisdiction western ghats fall in, might go ahead and pollute this natural savior of rains as well as flora and fauna in the name of westernization and need of more land for irrigation and economic development. Especially in the regions where hydro projects had been sanctioned because any gross negligence would result in heavy loss of land and life in these areas so the group is asked to rely in evidence collected in real time ground apart of images from the satellite.

Though the group is having a soft corner towards the irrigation projects but reducing the Ecological sensitive areas to lesser space then recommended by the WGEEP, it should also keep in mind that too much of human interview would eventually result in the monsoon cycle which had been regulated by these very ghats. article ends with a suggestion to consider one of the key points given by the group that the 6 states should be financially compensated for not disturbing the ecology, a point which is practically valid and reasonable if we are to have a land which had life.
