Hindu : 4 Apr - Editorial : Major threat from Micro Debris from Space.

Dying satellites in space when subjected to controlled blasts or collision explode forming many tine fragments as low as 1 millimeter. This article is about the dangerous outcome which is about to happen in space with such fragments which are more than 10 cm in size. It starts with a controlled demolition of a Chinese satellite BLITS in 2009, which according to article, an irresponsible act by the host country as the tiny pieces from such demolition are posing a great threat to other satellites in the orbit and also space shuttles.Article also talks on how these pieces though small in size can cause serious damage for an incoming shuttle or a satellite. One more example of such controlled demolition is also sighted in this article. but that demolition did not create havoc as it was made to explode at a lower altitude so the debris which tried entering into earth burnt into ash.

Article then mentions about the increasing number of such tiny pieces and how this number would increase considerably in near future as many country are planning to launch many satellites to monitor for their own necessities. Article is try to raise a serious to all the individual space organisations to look into this before we run out of options and would rely on luck hoping that a launched satellite will not come across such debris. However some solutions were also briefed which can prevent any catastrophic consequences one being an expensive method where an unmanned satellite will have an additional feature where it can navigate itself in case it comes across the path of debris which can damage it. Article ends with a cheaper and more safer method which can prevent debris to even form in space which is destroying a dying satellite at a lower orbit so that after explosion most of the pieces would come under the influence of gravity and hence burn to ashes in an attempt to come down to earth.
