Hindu : 23 Mar - Editorial : A new Canterbury tale

Christians- 2.2 billion people- 33.39% (of which Roman Catholic 16.85%, Protestant 6.15%, Orthodox 3.96%, Anglican 1.26%) are the percentages taken for the whole population in the world.[1]

This article shows that the archbishop[2] of Cantebury, Justin Welby has commenced his first public speech, while for the first time in Anglican Church's history a woman has become an archdeacon. The article also emphasizes on his life, giving light on how he rescued 200,00 children who were supported by the British government, now the supplies being decreased; he raised his voice as taking up one's duty towards them. He also encourages women bishops, which is a bitter matter to put forward that divides him from the Church of England. And he gives a strong opposition to homo sexual marriages, though he recognises that they are leading lasting relationships with love and commitment. Now the archbishop of over 80 million people he stands in a prime position and his stance is taken in every important matter that raises along his tenure.

One is ordinated for any position in the Church. The article was about the archbishop being elected for the position and his background, his stances taken.

Catholicism

Claim to be direct descendants of Saint Peter. The pope is considered as his successor.

Eastern Orthodox

The goal of Orthodox Christians from baptism is to continually draw themselves nearer to God throughout their lives. This process is called theosis, or deification, and is a spiritual pilgrimage in which each person strives to both become more holy through the imitation of Christ and cultivation of the inner life through unceasing prayer.

Oriental Orthodoxy

The Oriental Orthodox Churches and the rest of the Church split over differences in Christological terminology. The First Council of Nicaea (325) declared that Jesus Christ is God, that is to say, "consubstantial" with the Father; and the First Council of Ephesus (431) that Jesus, though divine as well as human, is only one being (hypostasis). Twenty years after Ephesus, the Council of Chalcedon declared that Jesus is one person in two complete natures, one human and one divine. Those who opposed Chalcedon likened its doctrine to the Nestorian heresy, condemned at Ephesus, that Christ was two distinct beings, one divine (the Logos) and one human (Jesus).

Church of the East

The Church of the East is said to have been formed by St Thomas.

Protestantism

  • Sola scriptura maintains that the Bible (rather than church tradition or ecclesiastical interpretations of the Bible)[5] is the primary and supreme source of binding authority for all Christians. This does not exclude other sources of binding authority, rather it places other forms of authority in subordination to the authority of Scripture.
  • Sola fide holds that salvation comes by grace through faith alone in Jesus as the Christ, rather than through good works.

These are some famous denominations in Christianity, while Anglican being a sub denomination under Protestantism.
[2]
An archbishop is a bishop of higher rank, but not of higher sacramental order above that of the three orders of deaconpriest (presbyter), and bishop.

  1. So the article is about the new archbishop who has a past which gives enough experience to see the pain and agony of the needed. funny that of all the points author noted, one statement seemed interesting and that is his denial on same sex marriage although he encourages women to participate in Churn activities. so all in all he is half way in support with the British government. More over author rightly points out a good job with a good pay doesn't end poverty. Looks like the newly elected archbishop has a lot of work to do in united kingdom which is supposedly going through the worst phases of economic meltdowns
